Rocky Mount, NC / Hoboken, NJ / Swathmore, PA - The N.C. Wesleyan men's tennis squad competed in three matches over the weekend against conference foe Mary Baldwin, Stevens, and #13 nationally ranked Swathmore. Wesleyan would go 2-1 on the swing and improve to 11-5 and 4-0 in league action.
Match 1:
#20 N.C. Wesleyan 7, Stevens 2
Kicking off the northeastern swing, the Bishops took on Stevens and left with a 7-2 win. Sweeping doubles,
Diego Segovia and
Albert Sitwell got the afternoon rolling with a 8-6 win at the #1 slot as did
John Falke and
Logan Stoltz with a 8-4 decision at #2 doubles.
In singles action, two of the matches went to a tiebreaker as #37 nationally ranked
John Falke got the 10-6 win in the third set
Albert Sitwell would take the 6-3, 6-2 decision on the #3 court.
Match 2:Â
#20 N.C. Wesleyan 9, Mary Baldwin 0
Continuing conference dominance, the Bishops cruised over Mary Baldwin and got the 9-0 win. Taking #3 doubles and #6 singles by way of forfeit, Wesleyan entered the match up 2-0 on the scorecard.
Brody Brice and
Alvaro Gomez would both sweep their doubles and singles matches easily, 8-0 in doubles and 6-0, 6-0 in singles.
Gustavo Rivas also looked sharp for the Bishops in singles, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win at the #4 slot.
Match 3:
#20 N.C. Wesleyan 4, #13 Swathmore 5
In a heartbreaker at Swathmore, Wesleyan would see itself at match point twice, but couldn't pull out the massive win over the #13 squad in the nation. Sweeping doubles, the Battling Bishops received a huge 8-4 win at #1 doubles by
Diego Segovia and
Albert Sitwell.
Sean Keane and
Andy Fanzaga would earn a tiebreak win at the #3 position to make the score 3-0 headed to singles.
Albert Sitwell got a monster win at the #3 slot to get the Bishops within one game of a win.Â
