Hilton Head, SC - The N.C. Wesleyan women's tennis team opened its spring break trip with a tightly-contested match against Morningside on Sunday afternoon, narrowly falling 4-3 in a back-and-forth battle in Hilton Head.
The Bishops started strong in doubles play, capturing the crucial doubles point by winning two of the three matches. At the number two position, Andrea Elaez Miranda and Ivanna Torres delivered a dominant 6-2 victory. Linda Nhiwatiwa and Melanie Guzman Gonzalez followed with a convincing 6-1 win at number three doubles. Although Morningside claimed the top doubles match 6-3, Wesleyan's success on the lower courts secured the 1-0 team lead heading into singles.
In singles play, the Bishops continued to show resilience. Ivanna Torres provided one of the highlights of the day at number two singles, rallying after dropping the first set to secure a 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory in a thrilling super tiebreaker. Renata Torres also came through with a strong performance at number four singles, winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to keep the Bishops within reach.
With the match tied 3-3, all eyes turned to the number six singles court, where Linda Nhiwatiwa battled Morningside's Lidia Suarez in a marathon contest. Nhiwatiwa captured the opening set in a tiebreaker, but Suarez responded to win the second set and ultimately edged Nhiwatiwa 10-4 in the decisive super tiebreaker to clinch the victory for Morningside.
