Women’s Tennis Advances to USA South Championship with Semifinal Sweep of Methodist

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan women's tennis team is headed back to the USA South Athletic Conference Championship match after earning a dominant 4-0 victory over Methodist in Friday's semifinal round at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.

The Battling Bishops delivered a statement performance to keep the postseason run alive, setting up a chance to compete for the program's fourth consecutive USA South Tournament title.

Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead behind strong doubles play. The No. 3 duo of Melanie Guzman Gonzalez and Linda Nhiwatiwa made quick work of the Monarchs with a 6-1 victory to strike first, followed by a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles from Ivanna Torres and Andrea Elaez Miranda to clinch the doubles point for the Bishops. The top doubles matchup was left unfinished with Renata Torres and Bethan Fothergill trailing 3-2 when the point was secured.

In singles action, the Bishops continued to roll. Elaez Miranda delivered a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles to extend the lead to 2-0. Renata Torres followed at the No. 4 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win of her own, and Ajla Selimovic secured the clinching point at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory to complete the 4-0 sweep.

Fothergill, Ivanna Torres, and Guzman Gonzalez were all in strong positions in singles matches when play was halted due to the clinch.

The Bishops now turn its attention to Saturday's USA South Championship match, where NCWU will battle Southern Virginia for the tournament crown. First serve is set for 2:00 PM back at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
