Lexington, VA - The North Carolina Wesleyan women's tennis team saw its postseason run come to an end on Saturday morning, falling 4-0 to No. 2 nationally-ranked Emory in the NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round at the Upper Courts.
The Battling Bishops (10-7) battled hard but could not overcome the powerhouse Eagles (16-5). Emory secured the early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches. Bethan Fothergill and Renata Torres fell 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while M. Guzman Gonzalez and Linda Nhiwatiwa were also defeated 6-1 at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with Andrea Elaez Miranda and Ivanna Torres trailing 5-3.
In singles play, Emory continued its strong showing. Dakota Fordham posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to push the Eagles' lead to 2-0. Moments later, Izzy Antanavicius claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bethan Fothergill at No. 2 singles, followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win by Eliza McPherron at No. 5 singles to clinch the match.
The remaining matches at Nos. 1, 3, and 4 singles were left unfinished.
The Battling Bishops conclude another strong season with a 10-7 overall record and an NCAA Tournament win to its credit, marking another year of continued success for the program.
