NC Wesleyan University proudly announces the addition of Coach Omar Beasley to its Track & Field coaching staff as an assistant coach to Head Coach Bill Dunn.
Coach Beasley brings over 30 years of coaching experience, with an extensive background in USATF/AAU youth programs and competitive high school athletics.
Most recently, he served as the Director of Track & Field and Boys Head Coach at Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina — a historically decorated program that he helped revive and elevate over a four-year period.
Under Coach Beasley's leadership, Hillside returned to prominence at both the regional and state levels. His teams secured five conference championships, captured multiple regional titles and runner-up finishes, and earned top-10 placements at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships — including a 4th-place finish by the boys team in 2022 and a 5th-place finish by the girls in 2024.
He coached three individual 4A NCHSAA state champions, including two-time hurdles champion Desmond Smith and 2024 indoor pole vault champion Ayanna Jackson. He also guided Hillside’s girls 4x200m relay team to the 2025 4A NCHSAA Outdoor State Championship. Under his leadership, athletes across all event areas (most in sprints and hurdles) earned 19 individual All-State honors and contributed to 17 All-State relay performances. He also coached eight Conference Athlete of the Year award winners. Notably, standout sprinter Zyon Alston captured the 2025 Adidas Indoor National title in the 60m dash with a time of 7.48.
Coach Beasley's impact was felt across the program, with Hillside athletes breaking a total of 22 school records under his direction. Among the most notable were the boys and girls 4x100m and 4x200m relays, where both squads reset the school standard. The boys 4x100m team posted a record-breaking time of 41.59 seconds, while the girls ran 46.40 seconds. In the 4x200m, the boys recorded a school-best 1:26.00, and the girls ran an impressive 1:38.15. Individual event records included a 10.57 boys 100m and 21.51 boys 200m by Augustine Koroma, a 47.42 boys 400m by Hamir Hampton, an 11.61 girls 100m by Zyon Alston, and a 12-6 girls pole vault by Ayanna Jackson — each representing elite-level performances on the state stage.
During his lone stint at the collegiate level, Coach Beasley served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, North Carolina Central University. In this role, he coached sprints and horizontal jumps while also serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. His tenure included coaching the NCAA Division II national runner-up in the men’s long jump and contributing to the development of NCCU’s NCAA Division II national championship-winning men’s 4x100m relay team.
A forward-thinking and technically proficient coach, Beasley implemented a data-driven sprint and performance model utilizing trending technologies. These tools allowed for measurable improvement in athlete development and performance. His commitment to innovation, athlete mentorship, and academic support was foundational to Hillside’s success.
Coach Beasley’s arrival at NC Wesleyan marks an exciting new chapter for the Track & Field program. His proven track record of success, talent development, and culture-building aligns perfectly with the university’s mission to develop high-achieving student-athletes on and off the field.
Coach Omar Beasley received a Bachelor of Arts in History from North Carolina Central University.
