Wesleyan Volleyball Season Ends in League Tourney First Round

Box Score

Raleigh, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's volleyball team made its first USA South Tournament appearance since 2012 on Tuesday night, but despite a strong showing, the 6th-seeded Bishops would fall in the first round to 3rd-seeded William Peace by a 3-0 score (25-20, 25-16, 25-23). The match was played at 2nd-seeded Meredith College and marked the end of the careers of four-year seniors Yasmin Alexander, Ayla Brewer, Christina Huber, Evie Hunter, and Tori Stewart.

The first two sets were tied midway through each before the Pacers pulled away down the stretch for a 2-0 match lead. Wesleyan dominated the third set, racing out to a 21-10 lead and later a 23-13 advantage.  The Pacers (24-7), however, put together a furious rally to push 12 straight points to complete the improbable comeback and seal the sweep.

Stewart tallied 10 kills on the night and finished her career with 1,061 total, which ranks fourth all-time in Bishop history. Huber wrapped up her stellar libero career with 22 digs to finish with 1,927 total, which ranks second all-time. Hunter, who was named to the 2016 USA South All-Sportsmanship Team, chipped in eight kills and 13 digs, while Brewer dished out 32 assists.

As a team, the Bishops (10-18) finished with the most overall wins and conference wins since 2012, as well as the aforementioned USA South Tournament berth.
