Maryville, Tenn. - The Battling Bishop men's soccer team saw its 2016 season come to a heartbreaking end with a 2-1 loss to Maryville College in the USA South Tournament Championship on Saturday evening. Wesleyan finishes with a 14-6 overall record, highlighted by a share of the league's regular season championship.

The Bishops held an initial 1-0 lead when A.J. Wadda juked MVC keeper Ryan Jorgensen in the 23rd minute for his 10th goal of the season. The Scots, however, answered just over a minute later with a goal by Chris Fernandez from 45 yards out.

The game would remained tied at 1-1 until the 55:31 mark when Tim Baker netted the eventual gamewinner on an assist from Caleb Lucas. The Scots (18-2) settled in from there, out-shooting NCWC 5-1 the rest of the way to secure the tourney crown and the league's automatic NCAA berth.

Despite holding a 12-8 overall shot advantage, Wesleyan was able to put just four of those chances on frame. Jorgensen made the trio of saves needed to seal the victory, while Bishop keeper Alex Magner made three stops of his own.

For their efforts, three Bishops were named to the All-Tournament Team: forward Olafur Einarsson, midfielder Jordan Davis, and defender Halldor Bjarneyjarson.

The championship appearance was the second for head coach Frankie Taal, who says farewell to ten seniors that have been instrumental in the program's success: Richard Kandarczyk, Drew Wiltse, Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson, Caetano Viegas, Alex Andrade, Chris Imoukhuede, Carlos Marin, Bjarneyjarson, Mo Jallow, and Julius Oskarsson.
