Game Recap: Football |

Bridgewater Tops Wesleyan 41-12.

Bridgewater, VA - The N.C. Wesleyan football team fell on the road to Bridgewater by a score of 41-12. A close game throughout, the Bishops kept the game within nine in the 4th quarter trailing 21-12. The key to the game for Wesleyan was forcing Eagle turnovers. The stifling Battling Bishop defense would force two interceptions and a squib kick-off recovery in the first half to give the offense plenty of opportunities to punch the ball in the end zone.

Ronechie Carter and Bryson Landrum were headaches for the Eagle's offensive coordinator all afternoon long accounting for both INT's and 16 tackles between them both. Carter would lead the team in tackles with 11, and Landrum would have a solid five of his own.

On offense, Leopolodo Cardelli stepped up big for the Bishops in the second quarter coming in for Herschman, throwing his first passing TD of the season and totaling 159 yards on 14/25 passing attempts.

Game Notes:
  • Wesleyan's special teams was dominant on Saturday. Not only did the Bishops recover a squib kick, but immediately after an Eagles score Kiami McKnight would return the kickoff 88 yards inside the Bridgewater five yard line to set-up a beautiful play action pass in the corner of an end zone for a TD. McKnight would end the day with six returns for 188 yards.
  • Defense continues to be a strong point for the Battling Bishops only allowing 203 yards in the air. The Wesleyan linebackers also were impressive on Saturday being able to make tackles in the gaps and accounting for many third down stops.
  • A brutal non-conference schedule comes to a close as the football program now heads into USA South action. The 2023 season is also the third season in a row every Wesleyan non-conference opponent hails from the state of Virginia.
Up Next:

The Battling Bishops will return home on September 30th after the upcoming bye week. It is the first game for Wesleyan at Vernon T. Bradley Jr. Stadium since the season's opening affair against Randolph-Macon on September 2nd. The Blazers of Belhaven will make the trek north from Jackson MS. for a 12:00 kick-off.
