Bass Breaks Home Run Record, Wesleyan Falls to CNU in NCAA Regionals

Newport News, VA - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball program was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Christopher Newport in the winner take all game seven. With the one run heartbreaking loss, the Battling Bishop's season ended with a 36-13 record and winning the conference title.

Scoring first on a huge two out RBI single, Javier Quintana brought home Tyson Bass and Drifton Padgett in the first to continue Wesleyan's timely hitting from Sunday. Having to respond to CNU's five spot in the 4th, Jaiden Barker singled down the line in the 5th inning to cut the deficit to a single run, where the score would remain until the 8th when the Captains would plate their 6th and final run of the contest.

Not going away without a fight, Tyson Bass led off the bottom of the 9th with a laser to left field, which broke the N.C. Wesleyan single season and career home run record. Plating another run in the 9th, Jackson Ellyson came up clutch with a pinch-hit single to make it a one run game with runners on first and second with no one out. Striking out the next two at bats, the Bishops were 180 feet away from tying the ballgame.

On the mound for Wesleyan, Sophomores Drake Hobgood and Nathanael Volk were phenomenal for Wesleyan, striking out five batters combined and only allowing an explosive offense to only six hits over eight innings of work.

With Tyson Bass breaking the home run record, he cements himself as one of the most explosive players in school history. After four years, the Lucama, NC native hit .330 for his career, ending with 47 home runs, 231 hits, and 174 RBIs. His 21st and final home run of the season tied Bass for second in the nation in that statistic this year.

Going as far as any Wesleyan team has made it in the NCAA Tournament in the past fifteen years, the 2024 Senior class put NCWU baseball back on the national stage. Winning back-to-back USA South titles, appearing in three NCAA Regionals and having Wesleyan's first All-American since 2008, the future of the program is bright for 2025 and beyond.
