Rocky Mount, NC - North Carolina Wesleyan used a dominant fourth quarter to earn its first win of the season Saturday evening, defeating Averett 69–60 in game one of the Jean Edge Classic inside Everett Gymnasium. The Bishops improve to 1–1 on the year.
In a game that featured five ties and multiple swings of momentum, Wesleyan saved its best basketball for the final period. Trailing 46–45 entering the fourth, the Bishops erupted for 25 points on 70% shooting and held the Cougars to just fourteen, sealing the win with tough defense and timely scoring.
Dorinda Jordan powered the Bishops with sixteen points, eight rebounds, and two steals while going 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Anaya Hall added thirteen points and five rebounds, knocking down 9-of-11 at the stripe. Kieara Hughes delivered eleven points and five assists, including a key three-pointer that pushed the Bishop lead to four late in the fourth.
Wesleyan's bench provided a major lift, combining for nineteen points. Kalaesia Lincoln scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds, while Des'Myah Croom and A'Niya Cotton contributed valuable minutes on both ends of the floor.
Averett (0–2) was led by Zariia America's twelve points and nine rebounds. The Cougars shot just 2-of-16 from three-point range and were held to eight points in the third quarter as Wesleyan's defense tightened.
The Bishops forced 25 turnovers and converted them into 27 points while scoring eighteen fast-break points. Wesleyan also matched Averett in the paint and outrebounded the Cougars 43–44 in a physical matchup.
