Rocky Mount, NC - Women's basketball fell behind early and was unable to recover, dropping a 74-67 decision to Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Everett Gymnasium. With the loss, the Battling Bishops close out the regular season as the number three seed for the upcoming USA South Tournament.
The Basics:
Score: N.C. Wesleyan 67, Brevard 74
Location/Venue: Rocky Mount, NC / Everett Gymnasium
Records: N.C. Wesleyan (14-8, 11-4 USA South), Brevard (18-5, 13-3 USA South)
Brevard came out strong, quickly building a lead in the first half. The Tornados held the Bishops to just 14.3% shooting in the opening quarter, as Wesleyan struggled to find any rhythm offensively. Brevard led 41-27 at the break.
The second half didn't start much better for the Bishops, as NCWU continued to battle inconsistent shooting. Wesleyan found some success in the fourth quarter, hitting 52.6% from the field and 71.4% from beyond the arc, but Brevard's early advantage was too much to overcome.
Leading the way for the Bishops was Corynthian Williams, who posted fifteen points and eight rebounds. Nadia Simmons added a strong defensive presence, contributing five rebounds and four assists, while Harmony Martin finished with eight points. Despite the effort, NCWU's 31% shooting performance from the floor hindered the ability to mount a full comeback.
Brevard's Josie Hester led all scorers with 29 points, supported by Makenna Parkins' fifteen points and six rebounds.
