Baseball Honors 1981 & 1982 Teams with Foundations of Excellence Celebration, Secures 5-4 Victory Over Southern Virginia

Rocky Mount, NC - In a night filled with history, celebration, and thrilling baseball action, the N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops honored its 1981 and 1982 baseball teams with the Foundations of Excellence Celebration at Bauer Field before securing a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Southern Virginia.

The evening began with a touching tribute to Coach Tony Guzzo, who led the 1981 and 1982 teams to their first-ever NCAA Division III World Series appearances, laying the groundwork for the program's national titles in 1989 and 1999. In honor of Coach Guzzo's legacy, his children, Dr. Gina Guzzo and Anthony Guzzo, delivered the ceremonial first pitches. The national anthem was beautifully performed by Jenna Pilkenton, a student-athlete from the N.C. Wesleyan volleyball team and the president of SAAC.

Following the pregame festivities, the Battling Bishops took the field in front of an energized crowd of over 600 fans and delivered a thrilling performance.

Southern Virginia clawed back in the third inning, plating three runs to reclaim a 4-3 advantage. The game remained tight until the bottom of the fifth when Javier Quintana crushed a solo home run to left field, tying the contest at 4-4.

In the sixth, Colin Scoggins delivered the decisive blow with an RBI fielder's choice, allowing Hobbs to cross the plate for the go-ahead run. The Bishops' bullpen held strong, with Drake Hobgood (2-2) earning the win after tossing 6.1 shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out six.
