Baseball Falls to Christopher Newport in Midweek Matchup

Newport News, VA - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference matchup to Christopher Newport, falling 14-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Battling Bishops jumped out to a strong start, plating three runs in the first inning. Jackson Hobbs put Wesleyan on the board with an RBI single, while Malachi Hayes and a fielding error by the Captains allowed two more runs to score. Marlon Bowen extended the lead in the second with a solo home run to left center, his first of the season, making it 4-1 in favor of the Bishops.

However, Christopher Newport responded with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a passed ball that allowed two runs to score. The Captains continued to build the lead, adding one run in the third, another in the fourth, and four more in the fifth to break the game open. A three-run seventh inning sealed the contest for CNU.

Hobbs led Wesleyan at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Bowen finished 1-for-3 with a home run. On the mound, the Bishops used nine pitchers in the game, with starter Marc DeNunzio allowing one run over an inning of work. Nathanael Volk (0-5) took the loss, giving up four runs in just a third of an inning.

For Christopher Newport, Josh Reinhold had a standout performance, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Ryan Morrison (4-1) picked up the win, tossing six innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out six.
