Byrd Named NCWU Male Athlete of the Year for 2024-25

Rocky Mount, NC - North Carolina Wesleyan Athletics is proud to announce that fifth-year running back Anthony Byrd has been named the 2024-25 NCWU Male Athlete of the Year. A product of Wallace-Rose Hill High School and a Business Administration major, Byrd put together a dominant final campaign for the Battling Bishop football program, earning widespread recognition for his efforts on and off the field.

Byrd was the engine behind Wesleyan's offensive attack throughout the 2024 season, compiling 1,340 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns on 203 carries. He also added fifteen receptions for 132 yards and two receiving touchdowns, demonstrating his versatility as a complete back. His longest run of the year—a 46-yard burst—came on the road at Southern Virginia, where he posted a season-high 218 rushing yards on 32 carries.

The veteran back opened the season with a bang, racking up 192 yards and two touchdowns at Averett, followed by a string of 100-yard performances that showcased his consistency and physicality. Byrd crossed the century mark in six different games and played a key role in Wesleyan's late-season push with a two-touchdown performance against both Greensboro and Brevard.

Byrd's excellence did not go unnoticed. He was named First Team All-Conference by the USA South Athletic Conference and earned D3football.com All-Region honors, solidifying his status as one of the top backs in the Southeast.

"Anthony epitomizes what it means to be a Bishop—tough, dependable, and driven," said Head Football Coach Jeff Filkovski. "He came back for a fifth year with something to prove, and he absolutely delivered. His leadership and production set the tone for our team all season long. This award is well-deserved."

The NCWU Male Athlete of the Year award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement, sportsmanship, and leadership. Byrd's honor is a testament not only to his record-breaking season but also to his commitment to excellence throughout his career at North Carolina Wesleyan.

"Anthony has been a cornerstone of our football program for the last five seasons," said Director of Athletics Aaron Denton. "He's not only a remarkable athlete, but an incredible representative of our university. His impact goes beyond statistics—he's left a lasting legacy for future Bishops to follow."
