The N.C. Wesleyan women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Piedmont on Monday afternoon at Scalf Field, falling to 0-1-1 on the young season. From the opening whistle, both sides battled for control in the midfield, with neither team able to create much separation. The Bishops generated several early looks at goal, led by the attacking efforts of Sam Dell, who recorded three shots, including two on frame. Piedmont responded with quick counterattacks but found Wesleyan's back line organized and goalkeeper Lauren Graham sharp between the posts. At halftime, the match remained scoreless, a reflection of both teams' disciplined defensive efforts.
The second half unfolded much the same way, with Wesleyan continuing to press forward while Piedmont relied on opportunistic strikes. The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Piedmont substitute Peyton Gates found a pocket of space and slotted home what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Bishops pressed hard in the final minutes, sending numbers forward in search of the equalizer, but could not beat goalkeeper Maggie Leger, who finished with four saves to preserve the shutout.
Despite the final score, the Bishops put together an encouraging performance. Graham tallied three saves, keeping the match tight until the closing stretch, while the defensive unit held Piedmont to just five total shots. The midfield unit provided steady energy throughout, helping Wesleyan keep pace with a strong opponent. Offensively, the Bishops demonstrated their ability to generate dangerous chances and will look to sharpen their finishing touch in the matches ahead.
Wesleyan now turns its attention to another non-conference test as the Bishops visit Mary Washington on Saturday, September 6.
