Bishops Battle in Tight Road Contest at Southern Virginia

N.C. Wesleyan battled through a highly competitive USA South Conference matchup on January 17, ultimately falling 77–71 to Southern Virginia at Knight Arena in Buena Vista, Virginia. The Bishops were locked in a back-and-forth contest throughout the afternoon, with nine lead changes and nine ties reflecting the intensity of the game. Wesleyan trailed 43–39 at halftime but responded with strong energy in the second half, briefly taking the lead behind efficient shooting and aggressive play in the paint. The Bishops finished the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field and stayed within striking distance until the final minute, but Southern Virginia capitalized at the free-throw line late to seal the outcome.

Nasir Johnson led N.C. Wesleyan with a strong all-around performance, scoring 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting while knocking down three three-pointers and adding defensive pressure on the perimeter. Justin Burden followed with 17 points and eight rebounds, providing consistent scoring inside and battling on the glass throughout the game. Deejayy Cox added 10 points and nine rebounds, helping anchor Wesleyan's interior presence and create second-chance opportunities. Rashod Smith contributed seven points and a team-high eight assists, directing the offense and setting up teammates during key stretches. Despite the result, the Bishops showed resilience, balance, and composure in a tightly contested conference road environment as they continue USA South play.
