Bishops Open Conference Play with Thrilling Home Win

Rocky Mount, NC - N.C. Wesleyan picked up a thrilling packed house 80–78 victory over Pfeiffer on January 3 in its first USA South Conference game of the season, using timely scoring and strong contributions across the lineup to secure the win in front of a fired-up home crowd at Everett Gymnasium. The Bishops played with pace and confidence from the opening tip, building a 40–36 lead at halftime and maintaining their edge through a second half where every possession mattered. Wesleyan shot 50.8 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range, while converting 66.7 percent of its free throws, helping the team make key plays down the stretch. The Bishops also showed balance in scoring and execution in transition, finishing with 38 points in the paint, 13 fast-break points, and 12 points off turnovers.

Everett Gymnasium was packed throughout the night, with an enthusiastic crowd creating an electric atmosphere that fueled the Bishops from start to finish and made the conference opener an exciting and memorable home environment.

James Jones led Wesleyan's offensive attack with 21 points, connecting efficiently from both inside and deep and providing scoring leadership throughout all 40 minutes. Rashod Smith added 15 points, paced the offense with aggressive drives and created opportunities in transition, while Ro'Mello Pegues punched in 20 points and eight rebounds, giving Wesleyan a physical presence on both ends. Markquan Gilbert also made a major impact with 14 points and eight rebounds, helping sustain momentum and secure boards in key moments. Deejayy Cox chipped in six points and seven rebounds, further bolstering Wesleyan's effort on the glass and defensively. In a game marked by lead changes, timely execution, and spirited crowd energy, the Bishops showed resilience and poise to close out a hard-fought 80–78 win over Pfeiffer in USA South play.
