Bishops Close Homecoming Weekend with 2-1 Victory

Rocky Mount, NC. — The North Carolina Wesleyan women's soccer team closed out Homecoming Weekend in dramatic fashion on Sunday, using a late game-winning goal from Samantha Fore to defeat Warren Wilson College, 2-1, at Scalf Field.

The Battling Bishops created opportunities early, with Jordan Fernandez and Makena Meyer each putting shots on goal in the opening 13 minutes. The two sides remained scoreless through the opening half as NC Wesleyan continued looking for the breakthrough.

NC Wesleyan came out aggressively after halftime and began to control the attack. Fore put an attempt on frame in the 55th minute before breaking through at the 61:35 mark, finishing an opportunity off an assist from Nicole Goodwin to give the Bishops a 1-0 advantage.

Warren Wilson responded in the 79th minute when Patricia Leiva converted a penalty kick to even the match at 1-1. The Bishops continued to press forward rather than settling for the draw, with Maison Berrios putting two shots on goal and Goodwin and Fernandez also creating late opportunities.

With just over a minute remaining, Fore delivered the deciding moment. The NC Wesleyan forward found the back of the net at the 88:43 mark for her second goal of the afternoon, putting the Bishops back in front, 2-1, and sealing the Homecoming Weekend victory.

Fore led the Bishops with two goals on four shots, including three attempts on frame, while Goodwin recorded the assist on the opening goal. NC Wesleyan finished with 13 shots and eight on goal while limiting Warren Wilson to just four total attempts.

The late 2-1 victory provided a fitting finish to Homecoming Weekend at Scalf Field, as the Battling Bishops closed the celebration with another win in front of the home crowd.
