Greensboro, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan put together a strong offensive performance on Wednesday afternoon but came up just short in a 10-9 road loss to Guilford at McBane Field. The Battling Bishops totaled 11 hits, including two home runs, and mounted multiple rallies throughout the contest.
Wesleyan struck first in the opening inning when Schumata Brown doubled to right center and Maison Nance followed with a two-run homer down the left-field line to give the Bishops an early 2-0 advantage. The momentum continued in the fourth as Nance doubled and later scored on a play that put Wesleyan back in front, 3-2.
Trailing 8-3 in the seventh, the Bishops answered with a three-run frame. Quintrel Pearson singled to spark the rally, and after Aydin Zimmerman and Hayes Hillier reached, Brady Williams and Brown each drove in runs to cut the deficit to 8-6. Brown finished with three hits and four RBIs on the day, while Nance added two hits, including a home run and a double.
Guilford extended its lead in the eighth, but Wesleyan refused to go away. In the ninth, Hayes Hillier and Williams drew walks to set the stage for Brown, who launched a three-run homer to right center to bring the Bishops within one at 10-9. Wesleyan placed the tying run on base but was unable to complete the comeback.
Drake Hobgood made the start on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings while allowing three runs on three hits and striking out two. Aaron Holley added 2.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs (one earned) and recording three strikeouts. Preston Workman, Caleb Dennis, Jackson Pavone, and Nathanael Volk also saw action in relief. Despite the narrow defeat, the Bishops showed resilience and offensive firepower, battling until the final out in a competitive non-conference matchup.
