A Familiar Face Leads the Way: John Thompson Named Director of Athletics

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – North Carolina Wesleyan University Athletics is proud to announce the appointment of John Thompson as the University's new Director of Athletics.

While the title may be new, Thompson is certainly no stranger to the Wesleyan community. A fixture of Battling Bishop Athletics for more than three decades, Thompson has built a legacy of excellence as the head coach of the men's basketball program while also serving in numerous leadership roles throughout the athletic department. His extensive experience, commitment to student-athlete success, and deep understanding of the University's mission make him a natural choice to lead NC Wesleyan Athletics into its next chapter.

Thompson is the winningest coach in North Carolina Wesleyan men's basketball history, accumulating more than 450 career victories while leading the Battling Bishops to multiple conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized as one of the premier coaches in Division III basketball and has served the profession through leadership positions with both the USA South Athletic Conference and the NCAA.

More importantly, Thompson's impact has extended far beyond wins and losses. For generations of student-athletes, he has been a mentor, teacher, and role model whose influence continues long after graduation. His dedication to developing young men and women both on and off the court has helped shape the culture that defines North Carolina Wesleyan Athletics today.

As Thompson assumes the role of Director of Athletics, he succeeds Aaron Denton, who recently departed Wesleyan to pursue a professional opportunity within the local business community.

The entire North Carolina Wesleyan family extends its sincere gratitude to Denton for his service, leadership, and commitment to Battling Bishop Athletics. During his time at Wesleyan, Denton worked tirelessly to support student-athletes, coaches, and staff while helping advance the University's athletic programs. His contributions have left a lasting impact, and he will always be a valued member of the Battling Bishop family.

"We are excited to welcome John Thompson into this leadership role," said NC Wesleyan administration. "His passion for Wesleyan, proven leadership, and unwavering commitment to our student-athletes make him exceptionally qualified to guide our athletic department. We are confident the future of Battling Bishop Athletics is in great hands."

For Thompson, the opportunity represents another chapter in a lifelong commitment to North Carolina Wesleyan University. Having dedicated much of his professional career to the institution, he understands the traditions, values, and expectations that have made Wesleyan Athletics successful.

As the Battling Bishops continue to build on recent successes across numerous programs, Thompson's leadership, vision, and experience will help position North Carolina Wesleyan Athletics for continued growth and achievement in the years ahead.
