Rocky Mount, NC. — The North Carolina Wesleyan University men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Regent on Thursday at Scalf Field, improving to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Battling Bishops opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Jesper Fornebo found the back of the net off an assist from Khadim Sylla, giving North Carolina Wesleyan a 1-0 advantage. The Bishops carried that lead into halftime after controlling much of the opening period and outshooting Regent 8-2 in the first half.
North Carolina Wesleyan added to its lead late in the second half. Levi Engdahl scored in the 81st minute off an assist from Lucas Andres Monrabal to make it 2-0. Regent answered just over two minutes later when David Gillespie converted a penalty kick, cutting the Bishops' advantage to 2-1.
The Bishops quickly responded and put the match away in the 87th minute. Lucas Andres Monrabal scored off an assist from Lorenzo Bertoni to restore the two-goal advantage and secure the 3-1 victory.
North Carolina Wesleyan finished the match with a 12-5 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bishops also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Elias Barneaud played the first half in goal before Julian Llanos handled the final 45 minutes, making one save.
Fornebo, Engdahl and Andres Monrabal each scored for North Carolina Wesleyan, while Sylla, Andres Monrabal and Bertoni each recorded an assist in the victory.
