Rocky Mount, N.C. – Three North Carolina Wesleyan University student-athletes earned USA South Athletic Conference weekly honors following standout performances last week, the league announced Monday.

Football freshman Derek Schemenauer was named the USA South Defensive Rookie of the Week, fellow freshman Jorge Hernandez-Lara earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors and sophomore goalkeeper Elliot Helander was selected as the Men's Soccer Defender of the Week.

Derek Schemenauer – Football Defensive Rookie of the Week

Schemenauer put together a strong performance in the Battling Bishops' 27-13 season-opening victory over Averett. The Raleigh, N.C. native totaled 10 tackles, including seven solo stops and three assisted tackles. He also recorded one tackle for loss and added a quarterback hurry in the win.

Jorge Hernandez-Lara – Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Hernandez-Lara played a key role on special teams in NC Wesleyan's victory over Averett. The Dalzell, S.C. native connected on both of his field goal attempts, hitting from 23 and 26 yards, while also converting all three of his extra-point attempts. He finished the game responsible for nine of the Bishops' 27 points.

Elliot Helander – Men's Soccer Defender of the Week

Helander helped guide the NC Wesleyan men's soccer team to a 1-1-1 record across three matches during the week. The Varberg, Sweden native played all 270 minutes in goal, allowing just three goals while totaling 13 saves.

Helander opened the stretch with three saves in the Bishops' 3-1 victory over Randolph-Macon before recording six saves in a 1-1 draw against Marymount. He closed the week with four saves while allowing just one goal in a 1-0 setback against Mary Washington.
