Former Battling Bishop standout and two-time USA South Pitcher of the Year (2021, 2022) Derrick Carter is in his third season as the pitching coach for the N.C. Wesleyan baseball program. Carter has quickly made a significant impact on the Bishops' pitching staff, producing back-to-back USA South Pitchers of the Year and leading the team to two consecutive NCAA Regional appearances.
As Wesleyan's ace during his collegiate career, Carter tallied sixteen wins, including an impressive 8-3 record in 2022. That season, he posted a team-best 2.64 ERA, logged five complete games, and struck out 102 batters over 95 innings. His dominance on the mound has translated seamlessly into his coaching, where his pitching staff has achieved back-to-back seasons with over 400 strikeouts.
Under Carter's guidance, standout pitchers Payne Stolsworth and Cord Butler both tied the school record for wins in a season with twelve. Butler also led the nation in wins in 2024, with both pitchers exceeding 100 strikeouts. Additionally, both Stolsworth and Butler would be named All-Americans by the ABCA.
For the 2025 season, Carter will also serve as the program's recruiting coordinator and strength coach.
Obtaining his MBA from NCWU in 2023, Carter and his wife Hannah enjoy cheering on the Bishops with their three children, Makenna, Liam, and Annaleigh.
