Tyson Bass begins his first season on the North Carolina Wesleyan baseball coaching staff as Graduate Assistant Coach with responsibilities for hitting and outfield development, bringing a wealth of high-level playing experience from both Division III and Division I competition.
A Lucama, North Carolina, native and Hunt High School standout, Bass was one of the most prolific offensive forces in NC Wesleyan baseball history. Over four seasons with the Bishops (2021-2024), he started 173 games, made 700 plate appearances and rewrote the program record book — becoming the school’s career home run leader (48) and single-season home run leader (21), as well as the all-time runs scored leader (227). He finished in the top five all-time at Wesleyan in RBIs (174), single-season hits (79) and stolen bases (89). His senior season earned elite recognition, including ABCA First-Team All-American, USA South Conference Player of the Year, D3baseball.com Second-Team All-American, and multiple regional player of the year honors; he was also named the 2024 NCWU Male Athlete of the Year. Bass was instrumental in leading Wesleyan to back-to-back conference championships and three NCAA regional appearances.Â
In his graduate season at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2025), Bass started all 61 games in right field for the Tar Heels — a premier ACC program — and hit .292 with 11 home runs, 10 doubles, a triple and 47 RBIs. He ranked third on the team in steals (12) and delivered standout moments including a grand slam and a four-hit, four-RBI game. His defensive impact was evident as he led all ACC outfielders in defensive runs saved (12.14).
As a coach, Bass brings a rare blend of power, plate discipline, speed, and defensive savvy. His journey from a record-setting small college career to a productive season at the Division I level provides a unique perspective to help Wesleyan’s hitters and outfielders elevate their games.
