Danny “D.J.” Bunn Jr. enters his second year at North Carolina Wesleyan University as the Defensive Coordinator, bringing a wide-ranging background in collegiate and high school football. A native of Goldsboro, N.C., Bunn brings more than a decade of experience as a coach, mentor and leader at institutions throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Bunn most recently served as an Assistant Coach for Defensive Backs and Equipment Coordinator at Fayetteville State University, where he helped develop two NFL Draft prospects and First Team All-Conference safeties. His responsibilities included coaching the defensive backfield, opponent film breakdown, multi-state recruiting and oversight of the program’s equipment operations.
Prior to Fayetteville State, Bunn coached running backs at Louisburg College while also serving as Academic Coordinator, where he oversaw study halls and tutoring support. He also contributed to offensive game planning and youth football camps.
Bunn previously served as Head Football Coach at Hargrave Military Academy, guiding the program through a cultural and competitive rebuild centered on structure, accountability, discipline and growth both on and off the field. His coaching background also includes stops at Fork Union Military Academy, Cleveland High School and Atkins High School, where he gained extensive experience in player development, defensive backs coaching and special teams coordination.
In his first season as Defensive Coordinator at North Carolina Wesleyan, Bunn helped lead a significant improvement on the defensive side of the ball. The Battling Bishops improved their national ranking by more than 20 spots in scoring defense, total defense and rushing defense, while also ranking 14th nationally in blocked kicks. Under Bunn’s leadership, the defense produced two First Team All-Conference defensive backs and one Second Team All-Conference linebacker. With the foundation established during his first season, Bunn expects continued growth and improvement from the Wesleyan defense heading into his second year.
As a player, Bunn competed at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels. He began his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, contributing to the Tar Heels’ appearances in the 2010 Music City Bowl and 2011 Independence Bowl before transferring to Winston-Salem State University. At WSSU, Bunn was a member of the Rams team that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship Game. He later served as a team captain and played free safety during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Bunn earned his bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from Winston-Salem State University.
Beyond football, Bunn is passionate about using coaching to develop student-athletes into leaders and productive members of their communities. He is the proud father of his son, Addison Champ Bunn.
