Football Wins Thriller On Homecoming, Downs Greensboro 34-28

Rocky Mount, NC - On a gorgeous night for football, Wesleyan defeated Greensboro 34-28 on Homecoming. In front of a massive crowd, Anthony Byrd would carry the ball 28 times and rush for 162 yards on the Pride. The string of dominance continues for Byrd as over the past two weeks, he has accounted for 414 yards of total offense, making him one of the most versatile backs in the country. 

Wesleyan would trot out a trio of quarterbacks including Zachary Marquis who would come in the 4th quarter and account for two touchdowns in the last five minutes of the game, His 107 yards would give the Bishops the come from behind victory and would bring a sold out Vernon T. Bradley Jr. Stadium to life. The game winning TD would come with 1:52 on the clock as Marquis would find Javarion Smith in the end zone to cap off a seven play 56 yard drive. 

On defense, Shefield Smith, Andrew Brown, and Eric Cooper would be the leading tacklers for Wesleyan accounting for 24 total tackles and two tackles for loss. Cooper would come up with the game winning sack as the Pride were stopped short of midfield with under a minute left on the clock to secure the victory.

Game Notes:
  • Off to a 2-1 start in conference play, Wesleyan now has back-to-back years with two wins in conference play. Currently, the Battling Bishops are 4th in the league.
  • Junior Anthony Byrd is off to the hottest start by a tail back in years for the Battling Bishop offense. His 414 total yards and four touchdowns in the past two weeks, ranks him as a top three back in Division III by D3data.com.

The football program will be back at home next weekend as Southern Virginia comes to town for a USA South clash at Vernon T. Bradley Jr. Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 12:00.
