Tyson Bass Walks off Bridgewater in Opening Weekend Thriller

Rocky Mount, NC - In one of the wildest ninth inning comebacks in recent memory, the N.C. Wesleyan baseball program defeated Bridgewater 9-8 in extra innings. Trailing by three runs with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Tyson Bass started the hit parade with a line drive to left that rocketed off the Bauer Field sign in left. Alex Moskal would step up right behind him and deliver a rope down the left field line to set up an RBI single from Isaiah Thomas who had two monster RBI knocks coming off the bench.

In the 10th, Maison Nance would get hit by a fastball to lead off the inning which led two a two-strike sac-bunt by Kam Walker in an extremely crucial situation. A Jackson Ellyson single to right would leave the game in the hands of Bass who already had three RBI's and three runs scored on the day. Ahead in the count, Bass capitalized on a pitch over the heart of the plate to walk it off in dramatic fashion up the middle.

The Basics:
Score:
 N.C. Wesleyan 9, Bridgewater 8
Location/Venue: Rocky Mount, NC / Bauer Field
Records: N.C. Wesleyan (1-1, 0-0 USA South), Bridgewater (1-1, 0-0 ODAC)

Pitching Decisions:

Win: #12 Cullen Davis (N.C. Wesleyan, 1,0)
Loss: #16 Nick Griffin (Bridgewater, 0-1)

On the mound, Andrew Tubb got his first start of the 2024 campaign and looked really sharp through 4.2 innings of work. He struck out six batters and used a good mix of pitches.

A name to watch out of the Wesleyan bullpen is Marc Dennunzio as the Southpaw saw his first action as a Battling Bishop on Saturday afternoon. Throwing off hitters with tremendous breaking pitches, he would throw 2.2 innings and strike out two Eagle batters.

Closing the game out and getting his first win of 2024 was Cullen Davis. An electrifying force on the bump, Davis struck out two of the three Eagles he saw in the 9th and continued an unstoppable momentum swing which was fully on the Battling Bishops side after the explosive bottom frame in the 9th.

Up Next:

The Battling Bishops will travel to Piedmont and face some of the best competition in the country next weekend in Champman, Piedmont, and Spalding. The weekend will begin on Friday afternoon at 12:00 against Spalding.
