Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Series from Southern Virginia

Buena Vista, VA - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball program hit the road for the first time in conference play and took on the Knights of Southern Virginia. Taking two out of three over the weekend, the #17 Battling Bishops will return to Bauer Field for two weekend series against Brevard and William Peace as conference play rolls on.

Game 1:

#17 N.C. Wesleyan 7, Southern Virginia 9

Looking sharp out the gate, Alex Moskal drove in Tyson Bass in the second at bat of the contest and later scored on an RBI ground out from Colin Scoggins to make it a 2-0 Wesleyan advantage. The Knights would respond with eight unanswered runs headed to the 7th before Tyson Bass launched a solo shot to start off the frame and bring around Caleb Elias. Wesleyan would later tack on three in the 8th as Seth Jones and Elias would deliver RBI singles to cut into the lead.

Game 2:

#17 North Carolina Wesleyan 17, Southern Virginia 0

Putting a beat down on SVU to begin the DH, the Wesleyan bats could not be stopped. Scoring three runs in the top of the second, Alex Moskal got the afternoon underway with a single up the middle to bring home Jaiden Barker for his first of four RBIs. In the third, Jackson Hobbs would go yard for the third run of the game, blasting a shot to left. The middle inning is where the offense would explode, scoring seven runs in the 4th-6th innings to put the game comfortably out of hand.

The 5th frame would see Alex Moskal, Tyson Bass, and Davie Morgan all deliver RBI singles which would plate four Wesleyan runs. Later blowing the game wide open, the hit parade continued with seven runs in the top of the eighth. Extremely productive, the duo of Bass and Moskal accounted for seven of the seventeen Bishop runs scored.

Improving to 6-0 on the year, Cord Butler was locked in on the mound. Throwing seven shutdown innings, the Senior from Kannapolis only allowed three hits and struck out nine Knights faced.

Game 3:

#17 North Carolina Wesleyan 10, Southern Virginia 8

With the series on the line, Javier Quintana delivered the first punch of the game, doubling to right center and scoring Senior Drifton Padgett. With both offenses going quiet for the second and third innings, the Bishops and Knights would score a combined seven runs in the 4th thanks to singles by Maison Nance and Drifton Padgett. Down by three going into the 8th, Wesleyan responded to force extra innings in the rubber match.

In the 10th, Jackson Ellyson and Drifton Padgett came up clutch with two huge singles to secure the series win for Wesleyan.

Chandler Padgett earned his second win of the year, throwing the game's final four innings and only allowing two hits.

Up Next:

Wesleyan will hit the road for a top 25 match-up on Wednesday as they make the trip to Christopher Newport and take on the #22 ranked Captains.
