Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team clinched game one of the USA South Championship Series on Friday night, defeating Brevard 8-3. Thanks to two homers by right fielder
Tyson Bass and outstanding work by
Cord Butler and
Dylan Cheeley on the mound, the Battling Bishops are now one game away from the conference crown.
An offensive showdown out the gate, Wesleyan scored six runs in the first three innings of the ballgame, starting out with a
Jackson Hobbs sac-fly and
Davie Morgan RBI single to make it 2-0 in the first. The 2nd saw Bass go yard to left center for a three run homer to extend the lead to 5-0.
Hit by a pitch in the third,
Maison Nance would bring home the 6th run of the contest, before Bass unleashed on a fastball to left center, clearing the trees for his 19th of the year.
On the mound,
Cord Butler dazzled for Wesleyan, striking out ten Tornados over the course of seven innings, while only allowing six hits. To close it out Junior
Dylan Cheeley was filling up the strike zone in the 8th and 9th, striking out four of his seven batters faced.
