Butler Throws Complete Game Shutout, Bishops Take First Game of NCAA Tournament

Newport News, VA - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team took game one of the NCAA Tournament after taking down Scranton 6-0 in the opening round of the tournament. Starting pitcher Cord Butler put Wesleyan on his back by going the distance and striking out thirteen in a three hit shutout. With the win, Butler now ties Payne Stolsworth and Jon Rardin for the most wins in a single season in school history with twelve.

Striking first, Davie Morgan put the Battling Bishops on the board with a sac-fly that brought home Tyson Bass for his first of three runs scored on the afternoon. Adding insurance runs, Jackson Hobbs delivered a clutch double down the line to send Bass and Drifton Padgett home. Alex Moskal then capped the third off by doubling down the left field line to widen the Bishop advantage to 4-0.

Wesleyan capitalized its final two runs of the contest off sac-flys by Blake Scott and Colin Scoggins to secure the 6-0 victory.

The Battling Bishops will face the #1 seeded Christopher Newport Captains at 12:30 PM tomorrow in the winner's bracket game at Captains Park.
