Newport News, VA - The Battling Bishop's baseball team forced a winner take all game seven at the Newport News Regional after sweeping a pair of games from Immaculata and Christopher Newport on Sunday. Thanks to an outstanding day on the mound, Wesleyan is now one game away from the super regionals.
Game 1:
N.C. Wesleyan 4, Immaculata 0
Taking the bump in Wesleyan's first elimination game was
Andrew Tubb, who was dialed in on the mound while pitching one of his best ever games. Throwing a complete game shutout, Tubb only allowed a single hit and struck out three Mighty Macs.Â
After a slow start at the plate,
Jaiden Barker crushed a 2-2 pitch to left field to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead. The score would remain the same until the 8th when Barker once again smoke a ball, this time in the gap for a two rbi double.
With one game down, the Bishops looked to take down Christopher Newport to force a game seven.
Game 2:
N.C. Wesleyan 6, Christopher Newport 1
With pitching coming at a premium in the NCAA Tournament, Wesleyan got another fantastic start by
Preston Workman, who tossed 4.1 innings and did not a allow a single run while striking out two Captains. Stepping up in a big way was transfer lefty
Marc Dennunzio who came in and got out of a huge bases loaded jam while giving the Bishops length out of the bullpen. Striking out seven Captains over the course of 3.1 frames, Dennunzio earned his first win of the season.
At the plate, the Bishops scored first in the 4th as
Colin Scoggins singled to left field and brought home
Javier Quintana for a 1-0 advantage out the gate. Breaking it open in the 6th, Wesleyan's offense struck for three runs thanks to a
Drifton Padgett single,
Seth Jones sac-fly, and a CNU error.
Tacking on two more in the 9th,
Javier Quintana singled up the middle to bring home
Davie Morgan and
Colin Scoggins would draw a bases loaded walk.
