Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team won its first game of the 2024 USA South Conference Tournament, taking down SVU 14-2 in seven innings. The Battling Bishops were led by a strong start on the mound from
Cord Butler and a three RBI game from right fielder
Tyson Bass.
Getting the afternoon started in the 2nd,
Maison Nance and
Jaiden Barker drove in a pair thanks to a sac-fly and Barker double. The 3rd and 4th innings saw the Battling Bishops hit two homers, the first, a moonshot off the bat of
Colin Scoggins over the Bauer Field sign in left field to bring home three. Bass would get his 17th of the year the unconventional way as he hit his first inside the park homer of the year to also bring home
Drifton Padgett and
Jaiden Barker.
Finishing the game off in the 7th,
Jackson Hobbs recorded one of three hits, doubling to left center to send around Bass and Padgett. Shortstop
Maison Nance would then hit a sac-fly to end the game via the run rule.
On the mound for Wesleyan, USA South Pitcher of the Year
Cord Butler delivered six outstanding innings of work, only allowing two earned runs and five hits, while striking out five Knights.
Dylan Cheeley came in relief for the 7th and struck out one in a flawless inning.
