Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan softball team picked up a pair of impressive wins on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Averett at Edge Field. The Battling Bishops secured a 5-3 victory in game one before dominating game two with a 12-3 run-rule win in five innings.
Game One: N.C. Wesleyan 5, Averett 3
Wesleyan came out firing in the first inning, plating five runs to set the tone. Ragan Holloman got the Bishops on the board with an RBI single, scoring Skyler Walker. Ava Lowry and Frances Hanshew followed with RBI hits before Ramzie Bryant capped the big inning with a two-run single to make it 5-0.
Averett responded in the third inning, scoring twice on an RBI single from Woodlief and a sacrifice fly by Brooks. Woodlief added a solo home run in the fifth, but the Bishops' early lead proved to be enough.
Addyson Romanczyk earned the win, tossing four solid innings while allowing two runs on six hits. Emily Humphrey recorded the save, striking out three over the final three innings.
Game Two: N.C. Wesleyan 12, Averett 3 (5 Innings)
The Bishops carried the momentum into game two, overwhelming the Cougars with an offensive explosion. After Averett took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Newcomb, Wesleyan quickly responded. Kayla Simmons tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom half, and the Bishops never looked back.
Wesleyan took control with three runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI bunt single from Alexis Whitfield and a run-scoring single by Walker. The third inning was the knockout blow, as the Bishops erupted for six runs. Holloman and Simmons delivered back-to-back RBI hits, while Lowry's two-run single helped extend the lead to 11-2.
Holloman added an RBI double in the fourth, pushing the lead to 12-2. Averett tacked on a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but it wasn't enough to avoid the run-rule defeat.
Morgan Aycock earned the complete-game victory, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two over five innings.
