Softball Sweeps Mary Washington in Doubleheader

Fredericksburg, VA - N.C. Wesleyan softball put on an impressive offensive display, sweeping a doubleheader against Mary Washington on Monday. The Battling Bishops claimed an 8-3 victory in game one before sealing the sweep with an 11-5 win in game two.

Game 1: N.C. Wesleyan 8, Mary Washington 3
The Bishops wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, as Kyiah Simmons launched a two-run homer in the first inning to give Wesleyan an early 2-0 lead. Mary Washington responded with a run in the bottom half, but Wesleyan continued to build momentum.

In the third, Skyler Walker scored on an RBI single from Simmons, extending the lead to 3-1. Mary Washington briefly tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning following a two-run single by Brigid Ward, but the Bishops took control in the sixth. Ragan Holloman delivered a bases-clearing triple to put Wesleyan back in the lead, while Simmons added an RBI single to extend the advantage to 7-3. Walker capped off the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh.

Emily Humphrey earned the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while striking out two. The Bishops' offense pounded out seventeen hits, led by three-hit performances from Holloman and Walker.


Game 2: N.C. Wesleyan 11, Mary Washington 5
The Bishops carried the offensive momentum into the second game, striking early with a grand slam from Ava Lowry in the first inning. Mary Washington answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half, but Wesleyan maintained a firm grip on the game.

The power surge continued in the fifth, as Holloman and Simmons each belted two-run homers to extend the lead to 8-1. Though Mary Washington managed to cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom half, the Bishops responded once again in the sixth with another two-run shot, this time from Kyiah Simmons.

Wesleyan capped off the win with an RBI single from Savannah Bain in the seventh. The Bishops tallied ten hits, with Lowry driving in four runs, while Holloman, Kayla Simmons, and Kyiah Simmons each added two RBIs.

Morgan Aycock secured the win after tossing 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three. Humphrey closed out the game with 2.1 innings of relief.

The Bishops will be back in action on Saturday, as NCWU faces nationally ranked Pfeiffer at 1:00 PM.
