Raleigh, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the Triangle Softball Classic in Raleigh, on Friday. The Battling Bishops defeated Oberlin 9-1 in five innings in game one before falling to Berry 5-2 in game two.
In the opener, Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Bishops plated three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run error that allowed Skyler Walker and Savannah Bain to score. Later in the inning, Ragan Holloman came home on a bases-loaded walk, putting NCWU up 3-0.
The Bishops continued to build the lead in the following innings. Walker stole home in the second inning, and both Kyiah Simmons and Ramzie Bryant launched home runs in the third to extend the lead to 7-0. In the fourth, an RBI groundout from Simmons and an RBI single from Ava Lowry pushed the lead to 9-0.
Oberlin scratched across a run in the fifth, but Emily Humphrey was dominant in the circle, allowing just four hits and no earned runs over five innings to secure the victory.
In game two, Wesleyan faced off against a tough Berry squad and fell 5-2. The Bishops opened the scoring in the first inning when Holloman crossed home on a throwing error. NCWU added another run in the third when Kylyn Dean scored on another defensive miscue to make it 2-0.
Berry responded with five unanswered runs, including a three-run sixth inning to take control of the game. Despite a three-hit performance from Kayla Simmons, the Bishops were unable to rally late. Morgan Aycock suffered the loss in the circle.
