Staunton, VA - After dropping the opener, N.C. Wesleyan softball responded with a resilient offensive performance in game two to earn a doubleheader split at Mary Baldwin on Saturday afternoon. The Battling Bishops moved to 22-14 overall with the 10-5 win in the nightcap after falling 10-2 in five innings in the opener.
Game One: Mary Baldwin 10, N.C. Wesleyan 2 (5 Innings)
The Bishops struck early with a two-run homer from Kyiah Simmons in the top of the first inning, but Mary Baldwin responded emphatically with six runs in the bottom half and never looked back. The Squirrels added four more in the third, including a grand slam by Hannah May, and cruised to a 10-2 run-rule victory.
Simmons' home run was Wesleyan's only hit of the game, while the Bishop pitching staff was tagged for thirteen hits and eight unearned runs. Morgan Aycock took the loss in the circle.
Game Two: N.C. Wesleyan 10, Mary Baldwin 5
In the second game, the Bishops bounced back with eleven hits and scored in five different innings to claim a convincing 10-5 win. The offense was led by Savannah Bain, Ava Lowry, and Aleah Jones, who each delivered multi-hit efforts and combined for six RBIs.
After falling behind 4-0 through two innings, the Bishops erupted for four runs in the third—highlighted by Bain's two-run single and Lowry's two-RBI double—to tie the game. NCWU added two more in the fourth, with Ramzie Bryant launching her first home run of the season and Skyler Walker later stealing home to give NCWU a 6-4 lead.
Lowry and Jones delivered again in the fifth with back-to-back RBI hits to extend the advantage to 8-4, and the duo capped off the win in the seventh as Jones tripled in Bain and later scored on an RBI single from Whitfield.
Bryant finished 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI, while Bain scored three runs and swiped two bases. Lowry posted a 2-for-4 day with two doubles and three RBIs, and Jones added a triple, a sacrifice bunt, and a pair of RBIs.
Emily Humphrey earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings while allowing just two earned runs on ten hits. Aycock pitched the final two innings to secure the win.
