Softball Swept by No. 2 Christopher Newport

Newport News, VA - The N.C. Wesleyan softball team faced a tough challenge on Wednesday, falling in both games of a doubleheader against No. 2 Christopher Newport at Captains Park. The Battling Bishops dropped the opener 7-1 before suffering a 10-1 defeat in five innings in the nightcap.

Game 1: Christopher Newport 7, N.C. Wesleyan 1

The Captains took control early, scoring a run in the first and adding three more in the third to build a 4-0 lead. The Bishops responded in the fourth when Alexis Whitfield delivered an RBI double to right center, plating Frances Hanshew to cut the deficit to 4-1.

However, Christopher Newport tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth to seal the win. Emily Humphrey (5-3) went the distance for Wesleyan, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits while striking out two.

Offensively, the Bishops managed seven hits, with Skyler Walker leading the way with a 2-for-4 performance. CNU's Jamie Martin (10-1) was dominant in the circle, striking out 13 batters over six innings.

Game 2: Christopher Newport 10, N.C. Wesleyan 1 (5 Innings)

Wesleyan struck first in the second inning when Ava Lowry launched a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1. Unfortunately for the Bishops, the Captains responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame before exploding for six runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Christopher Newport showcased its power with three home runs, including a three-run shot from Brooke Greaver and a two-run blast from Sammy Drew.

Morgan Aycock (4-4) took the loss for Wesleyan, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in 3.1 innings. The Bishops managed five hits in the contest, with Kayla Simmons collecting two.
