Softball Sweeps Meredith to Close Out Regular Season on High Note

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan softball team closed out its regular season with a dominant doubleheader sweep of Meredith on Saturday afternoon at Edge Field, taking game one 11-1 in five innings before securing a 4-1 victory in game two.

The sweep moves the Battling Bishops to 26-14 overall, capping a strong regular season as NCWU will now turn its focus toward the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament.

Game One: N.C. Wesleyan 11, Meredith 1 (5 innings)

The Bishops wasted no time jumping on the Angels in the opener, plating eight runs in a huge first inning to seize control early. Skyler Walker scored the first run on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1, and from there the Wesleyan offense exploded. Savannah Bain, Ava Lowry, Hannah Rubino, Walker, and Ragan Holloman all contributed RBIs in the frame, including a two-run single from Holloman to cap the scoring.

Wesleyan tacked on three more insurance runs with one each in the second, third, and fourth innings. Bain and Rubino each finished with two hits and combined for three RBIs, while Alexis Whitfield and Ava Lowry also drove in runs to pace the Wesleyan offense.

In the circle, Morgan Aycock improved to 10-5 on the season with a complete-game effort, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four in 5.0 innings of work.

Game Two: N.C. Wesleyan 4, Meredith 1

The nightcap proved to be more of a pitcher's duel, but once again the Bishops found timely offense to complete the sweep.

After four scoreless innings, the Bishops broke through in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Holloman that brought home Whitfield for a 1-0 lead. Meredith answered with a run in the top of the sixth to even the score, but Wesleyan responded immediately in the bottom half. Ramzie Bryant delivered a go-ahead RBI single down the left field line before Ava Lowry launched a two-run home run—her first of the season—to give the Bishops breathing room at 4-1.

Emily Humphrey was outstanding in the circle, going the distance to earn her 10th win of the season. She allowed just one run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks across 7.0 innings.
