Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan softball team bounced back from a game one shutout to earn a thrilling split against Greensboro in front of a lively Hawaiian Day crowd at Edge Field on Saturday. The Bishops fell 6-0 in the opener but came through with a gritty 3-2 victory in game to secure the doubleheader sweep and move to 17-13 on the season.
Game 1: Greensboro 6, N.C. Wesleyan 0
The opener belonged to Greensboro, who rode a dominant pitching performance from Emily Ebert to blank the Bishops. Ebert tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out five.
The Pride jumped ahead early, scoring in the first, third, and fourth innings to build a 5-0 lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth. Infielder Ray went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Frazier added two hits and three RBIs to lead the offense.
Wesleyan's offense was led by Kayla Simmons, Savannah Bain, and Frances Hanshew, who each recorded a hit. Emily Humphrey (6-3) took the loss in the circle, giving up four earned runs over 3.1 innings.
Game 2: N.C. Wesleyan 3, Greensboro 2
The Bishops shook off the loss and came out swinging in game two behind key hits and a strong outing from senior Morgan Aycock. Aycock went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits and walking four while allowing just two runs over seven innings.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, Kyiah Simmons quickly energized the dugout with a solo homer to left in the bottom half to cut the deficit. The Bishops tied the game in the fourth when Savannah Bain delivered an RBI single to score pinch runner Samantha Hughson.
An inning later, Kayla Simmons came through with the go-ahead RBI single up the middle, scoring Skyler Walker and putting the Bishops ahead for good. Wesleyan's defense and Aycock did the rest, shutting down the Pride over the final two innings.
Walker had a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Kyiah Simmons reached base twice and tallied her second RBI of the day.
