Women's Soccer Falls in Tight Contest vs. JWU

North Carolina Wesleyan dropped a close 1-0 decision to Johnson & Wales University in women's soccer action today at Scalf Field in Rocky Mount. The Bishops had several opportunities but were unable to convert, while JWU struck early and then held on for the win.

The only goal of the match came in the 7th minute, when Olivia Kieffer put one away off an assist from Gina Marie Rumschlag for JWU. From that point on, Wesleyan pressed forward, controlling more of the possession and creating chances, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Individually, Wesleyan had some bright moments. Midfielder Samantha Dell took three shots, including one on goal, and nearly leveled the match when she was awarded a penalty kick in the 58th minute, but JWU keeper Zoe Balmer made the save. Mia Scherber and Eden Whiteside also each had a shot on goal among their efforts. Whiteside played basically the full match, logging 85 minutes and managed one shot that was on goal. Dell played the full 90 minutes as well. On defense, Lauren Graham in goal for Wesleyan made one save on the day.

From a team perspective, Wesleyan outshot JWU 11-3 overall, and held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks, showing promise in building pressure. However, the one save by JWU's Balmer on Wesleyan's best chances proved crucial. JWU committed 10 fouls compared to Wesleyan's 5. The Battling Bishops open USA South Conference play at home Saturday, September 20th at 2pm.
