Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan opened its three-game series against LaGrange College on Saturday at Bauer Field with a high-scoring battle in game one before returning for the nightcap under the lights.
In the opener, the Battling Bishops exploded offensively but came up just short in a 14-12 setback. After LaGrange plated two runs in the third, Wesleyan answered with a five-run second inning sparked by RBI hits from Matthew Hannah, Riley Anderson, Hayes Hillier, and a sacrifice fly from Maison Nance. The Bishops added three more in the third, highlighted by a three-run homer from Riley Anderson, and pushed their lead to 12-5 with a three-run sixth inning as Banks Hartman delivered a clutch bases-clearing double. Anderson finished with three hits, including a home run and five RBIs, while Hartman drove in three and Malachi Hayes added two hits. Despite the offensive surge, LaGrange capitalized on late opportunities, scoring six in the eighth and three in the ninth to edge Wesleyan in a back-and-forth contest.
In game two, Wesleyan was locked in a pitchers' duel but fell 4-1. Colby Lewis turned in a strong start, working 8.1 innings and allowing just four runs—none earned—while striking out seven. The Bishops threatened early as Schumata Brown doubled in the first inning and the offense put runners on base, but timely hits were limited against LaGrange's pitching. Wesleyan's lone run came in the ninth when Maison Nance launched a solo home run to left field. Brown recorded two hits, and Aric Stewart added a base knock, but LaGrange used a three-run ninth to secure the victory.
Though the results did not fall in their favor, the Bishops showcased offensive firepower in game one and a strong pitching effort in game two as the series continued at Bauer Field.
