Asheboro, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan traveled to Asheboro on Saturday for a doubleheader against Greensboro at McCrary Park, producing a strong offensive showing in the opener before falling 21-14, and then dropping a tightly contested 3-2 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, the Battling Bishops jumped out quickly and built an early lead behind an explosive offensive performance. Maison Nance opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, and Wesleyan continued to add runs throughout the early innings. Riley Anderson tripled and scored in the second, while Banks Hartman, Brady Williams, and Malachi Hayes each delivered RBI hits during a three-run third inning to stretch the lead. The Bishops added two more in the fourth and another run in the fifth before breaking the game open with a six-run sixth inning highlighted by a two-run double from Hayes and a two-RBI single from Jake Flowers. Hayes finished with four hits and four RBIs, Anderson added three hits and three runs scored, and Flowers collected three hits and two RBIs as Wesleyan totaled 18 hits in the contest. Greensboro answered with several big innings late, including a nine-run sixth and a seven-run seventh, to rally past the Bishops despite Wesleyan's offensive surge.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Wesleyan again struck early but came up just short in a pitcher's duel. Malachi Hayes doubled to lead off the game and later scored on a run-scoring double from Schumata Brown to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead. Greensboro answered with two runs in the second inning and added another in the fourth to move ahead 3-1. Wesleyan cut the deficit to one in the fifth when Maison Nance delivered an RBI single that brought home Jake Flowers. Hayes and Nance each finished with three hits to pace the offense, while Kyle Brazaeu added two hits. On the mound, Colby Lewis struck out six over four innings before Drake Hobgood delivered four strong innings of relief with five strikeouts to keep the Bishops within striking distance. Despite putting runners on base late, Wesleyan was unable to complete the comeback as Greensboro held on for the narrow victory.
