Bishops Drop High-Scoring Contest to Roanoke

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan battled through a high-scoring contest on Wednesday afternoon at Bauer Field but fell 19-12 to Roanoke despite a strong offensive showing and a late push from the Battling Bishops. Wesleyan totaled 12 hits and drew nine walks, keeping pressure on Roanoke throughout the game.

After falling behind 1-0, the Bishops got on the board in the second inning when Hayes Hillier delivered a sacrifice fly to score Brady Williams and even the game. Roanoke answered with a four-run fourth inning, but Wesleyan responded in a big way in the bottom half. Kyle Brazaeu singled to spark the rally before Williams and Jake Flowers reached to load the bases. Drew Krause worked a bases-loaded walk, and Malachi Hayes followed with an RBI groundout. Schumata Brown then delivered the biggest hit of the inning, ripping a two-RBI triple to give Wesleyan a 5-4 lead.

Roanoke regained control with runs in the fifth and a four-run sixth inning to take a 10-5 advantage, but the Bishops continued to fight. Wesleyan mounted its biggest rally in the eighth inning, plating seven runs on seven hits. Matthew Hannah drove in a run with a single before Brown came through again with a two-RBI single. Banks Hartman added a two-RBI double, and Brazaeu followed with an RBI single as the Bishops cut the deficit to 16-12.

Despite the offensive surge, Roanoke added insurance runs late to secure the win. Brown led the Bishops with two hits and four RBIs, while Brazaeu and Williams each collected multiple hits. On the mound, Drake Hobgood made the start before Jackson Pavone, Tyler Jumper, Caleb Dennis, Nathanael Volk, Mason Botbol, Preston Workman, and Sam Johnson all saw action in relief as Wesleyan worked through the contest.
