Bishops Split Doubleheader with Mary Washington at Edge Field

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan softball split a doubleheader with Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon at Edge Field, earning a 4-2 victory in the opener before falling 6-5 in a tightly contested second game.

In game one, the Battling Bishops used timely hitting and a strong outing in the circle from Addyson Romanczyk to secure the win. Wesleyan struck first in the opening inning when Kayla Simmons delivered an RBI double to right center, bringing home Ragan Holloman. The Bishops added two more runs in the second as Savannah Bain doubled and later scored on an RBI double from Lexi Howerton before Aleah Jones followed with a run-scoring double to push the lead to 3-1. Wesleyan added an insurance run in the fifth when Jones singled and Holloman followed with a base hit to set up a sacrifice fly from Kyiah Simmons that plated another run. Romanczyk tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing just four hits and two runs while walking two and striking out two to earn the victory. Wesleyan finished with seven hits in the game, with Jones and Howerton each recording two.

The second game featured a back-and-forth battle as the Bishops rallied to erase an early deficit before coming up just short. Mary Washington jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning and added two more in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the third when Kayla Simmons singled to bring home a run before Brooke Markiewicz followed with an RBI single to cut the margin to 5-2. The Bishops continued to chip away in the fifth inning. Ragan Holloman and Kyiah Simmons opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Kayla Simmons drew a walk to load the bases. Markiewicz then delivered a two-run double to left center to bring Wesleyan within one, and a defensive miscue allowed another run to score to tie the game at 5-5. Mary Washington regained the lead in the fourth and held off the Bishops late to claim the 6-5 decision. Offensively, Kayla Simmons led the way with three hits, while Markiewicz recorded three RBI and Holloman scored twice. Kendall Wallace provided solid relief in the circle, working 4.2 innings and allowing just one run.

The split moves Wesleyan forward after a competitive afternoon at Edge Field, as the Bishops showcased resilience both at the plate and in the circle across the two contests.
