Fayetteville, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan evened its conference series at Methodist with a 7-5 victory on Saturday, using timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to secure the win. The Battling Bishops capitalized on early opportunities and delivered late to pull away in a back-and-forth contest.
Wesleyan got on the board in the second inning as Schumata Brown came around to score on an error, and the Bishops broke things open in the third with a four-run inning. Banks Hartman drove in a run with a double before Brown followed with an RBI single. The Bishops took advantage of defensive miscues to add two more runs and build a 5-1 lead.
Methodist answered with four runs in the bottom half of the third to even the score at 5-5, but both teams were held scoreless over the next several innings as pitching settled in. Nathanael Volk delivered a strong outing, going eight innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out five to keep Wesleyan in control.
The Bishops regained the lead in the eighth when Jake Flowers delivered an RBI double to score Brown, and added an insurance run in the ninth as Marlon Bowen drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Maison Nance. Aaron Holley closed out the final inning to earn the save and secure the conference win.
At the plate, Brown led the way with three hits and three runs scored, while Hartman added two hits and an RBI. Flowers contributed a key RBI double, and Bowen drove in a run late as Wesleyan's balanced effort lifted the Bishops to the victory.
