Bishops Outlast Meredith in Extras to Reach USA South Championship

Raleigh, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan softball punched its ticket to the USA South Conference Tournament Championship with a thrilling 2-1 extra-inning victory over Meredith on Sunday afternoon in an intense winner-take-all matchup.

After dropping the previous game to Meredith earlier in the day, the Battling Bishops responded with resilience in a tightly contested battle that went into the eighth inning before Wesleyan finally broke through.

Meredith struck first in the second inning on a solo home run, and the score remained 1-0 for much of the afternoon as both teams traded defensive stops and pitching performances. Wesleyan continued to apply pressure offensively, totaling 11 hits in the game, but Meredith was able to escape several key situations to maintain the slim lead.

The Bishops finally broke through in the seventh inning when Brooke Markiewicz singled and later scored on an RBI double from Kayla Simmons to even the score at 1-1 and force extra innings.

In the eighth, Wesleyan delivered the decisive moment. Caleigh Warf singled to lead off the inning before advancing to third following a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. Lexi Howerton then came through with a clutch RBI single to score Warf and give the Bishops their first lead of the game at 2-1.

Meredith threatened in the bottom half of the inning, putting the tying run on third base, but Kendall Wallace stayed composed in the circle and secured the final outs to send Wesleyan to the conference championship game.

Offensively, Kayla Simmons led the way with three hits and the game-tying RBI, while Brooke Markiewicz and Caleigh Warf each recorded two hits. Ragan Holloman also added a multi-hit performance as Wesleyan finished with 11 hits overall.

In relief, Kendall Wallace was outstanding, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out four to earn the victory.

The win capped off an exciting and emotional battle for the Battling Bishops, as Wesleyan advanced to the USA South Conference Tournament Championship with the dramatic extra-inning victory.
