Softball Defeats Salem 11-1 in Game One; Extends win streak to 13

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Softball team extended their winning streak to 13 games with a game 1 win, 11-1 over conference foe Salem College on the road Wednesday afternoon. Salem then ended Wesleyan's win streak at 13 games in game two as the Spirits went on to win 4-1. 

With the split, the Lady Bishops go to 15-6 overall and 9-1 in the conference while Salem improves to 11-8 and 2-2 in the USA South. 

NCWC  11, SALEM 1

Sophomore 2B Meredith Booth led the Bishops with a big game one as she hit two home runs, both in the same inning, as Wesleyan piled on 9 runs in the third. Booth led off the inning with a solo home run and then capped the inning with a 3-run bomb as well. She finished 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs and 8 total bases. Following Booth's leadoff homer, freshman 3B Brianna Myers came up and stroked a 2-run single plating Wesleyan with a 3-0 lead. Catcher Kayla Molivas then drove in the 4th run with a single before sophomore Bryona Knight followed with her own 2-run single to give the Bishops a 6-0 lead in the third. Booth then ended the third with her big home run.

Senior RF Hannah Ivester also had a big game going 3 for 4 to increase her average to .386 with a 2-run double to clinch the game in the 5th while Knight also had a multi-hit game including a double.

Braswell ended up throwing all five innings allowing just 3 hits and one run on 3 walks and 7 strikeouts to improve to 9-2. 

SALEM 4, NCWC 1

Salem got out to a quick 2-0 lead on pitcher Shelby Godwin (6-4) and the Bishops in the first inning. SS Meredith Mize then came in to score on a wild pitch in the 2nd inning to get within one run, but could not muster any more runs the rest of the game. Godwin threw 6 innings allowing 10 hits and 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 walks and 6 strikeouts as she got the hard-luck loss.

Wesleyan totaled 7 hits led by a two-hit game from catcher Summer Phillips while Braswell and Phillips led with doubles. Phillips is now hitting .458 on the year.

Wesleyan, now 15-6, is next in action on Saturday when they go to Pfeiffer to battle in a 2 PM doubleheader.
