Bishops Honor Seniors, Win LaGrange Series in Extras

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's baseball team celebrated its 2015 Senior Day on Sunday afternoon by posting an 11-10 victory over LaGrange College in extra innings. The two teams had previously split Saturday's doubleheader, setting up Sunday's rubber game that saw Wesleyan tally the USA South series win. Prior to the game, head coach Charlie Long honored the seven senior members of his squad: Brad Guengerich, J.J. Rodriguez, Marcus Kornegay, Stephen Machin, Lee Dunn, George Moore and Ricardo Ciuffetelli.

Sunday's game saw LaGrange race out to a 9-5 lead after four complete, but Ciuffetelli's second career homerun in the fifth cut the deficit in half, 9-7. After the Panthers made it 10-7 with a run in the sixth, the Bishops countered with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to force a 10-10 tie heading into extras.

In the bottom of the tenth, relief pitcher Dillon Moore stepped in the box for his first at-bat of the season and promptly delivered a double to left field. An intentional walk and bunt single eventually loaded the bases with no outs, and Justin DiSanto was then hit by a pitch to bring home the game-winning run.

DiSanto turned in stellar game with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate that included three RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Ciro Norzagaray went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Moore (2-1) picked up the win on the mound in two innings scoreless relief.

Jim Reed paced the Panthers at the plate with four RBIs on a trio of hits. Blake Schuck (0-4) suffered the loss out of the pen.

Previously on Saturday, Wesleyan took the series opener by a 7-2 score. Robert Mondoux (2-3) picked up the win, allowing just one run on one hit over six complete, while fellow sophomore Richard Harrell earned his first save in three solid innings of relief.

Offensively, Luis Palencia, James Lovett and Marcus Anderson had two hits apiece, while Norzagaray scored three of the Bishops' seven runs.

The Panthers took game two by a 16-2 score in seven innings to salvage the split.

Wesleyan (10-24, 8-19 USA South) travels to Bridgewater College on Monday for a non-conference contest with the Eagles. First pitch is slated for 4:00pm.
