Wesleyan Baseball Ends Tournament Run with Loss to LaGrange

| Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Wilson, N.C. - The Battling Bishop baseball team saw its 2016 USA South Tourney run come to an end with a 7-3 loss to LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon at Wilson's Fleming Stadium. Wesleyan will now wrap up its season on Senior Day next Saturday versus Ferrum.

After opening the tourney with a solid 3-1 win over 6th-seeded Covenant on Thursday night, the 3rd-seeded Bishops suffered a tough 8-7 loss to Huntingdon on Saturday at Bauer Field. The Bishops took a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but the 7th-seeded Hawks plated single runs in the eighth and ninth, capped by a walk-off single with the bases loaded.

Ciro Norzagaray and Tony Sanchez each ripped a pair of hits for the Bishops, while James Lovett and Caleb Narron drove in two runs apiece. Norzagaray (1-1) also suffered the loss in the relief.

The loss sent Wesleyan back to Fleming Stadium later in the evening for an elimination game with top-seeded Ferrum. Robert Mondoux (2-1) turned in a solid start on the hill, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts in eight innings of work. Offensively, Kaelan Jacobs' 4-for-4 showing at the plate included three RBIs and highlighted NCWC's 10-1 win.

Wesleyan's second elimination game came against 2nd-seeded LaGrange on Saturday afternoon at Fleming. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before RBIs by Jefferson Knight and Justin DiSanto would get the Bishops to within one. Unfortunately, LaGrange responded with a trio of runs (two unearned) in their next at-bat, and although James Lovett blasted a solo homerun (10) in NCWC's half of the frame, the Bishops would not get any closer en route to the four-run loss.

Jacobs and pitcher Nate Gardner each had two hits for the Bishops. On the mound, Gardner allowed just three earned runs on seven hits with four Ks in the losing effort.

Next Saturday's twinbill with Ferrum is slated for a noon start at Bauer Field. Head Coach Charlie Long will be honoring his seniors prior to game one.
