Bishops Upset #28 CNU, Chang Clinches with Three-Set Victory

Newport News, Va. - The N.C. Wesleyan men's tennis team extended its current winning streak to nine matches on Saturday, upsetting 28th-ranked Christopher Newport University by a 5-4 score on the road. Junior David Chang provided the clincher at #6 singles with a 7-5 victory in the third set.

The Bishops (9-3) overcame a 3-0 doubles sweep by the Captains to earn the win, earning points at the top four singles seeds to set the stage for Chang's heroics.

In doubles, Wesleyan narrowly missed a pair of points as Sebastian Sikh/Ioannis Brokakis fell to CNU's David Reed/Justin Cerny by a 9-7 tally. The Captains cruised to an 8-3 win at #2 and edged out NCWC's Ben Tolhurst/J.D. Telles 8-6 at #3 for a 3-0 lead entering singles action.

NCWC made quick work of the deficit as Sikh, Brokakis, Telles, and freshman David Appelqvist were easy straight-set winners at the #1, #2, #3, and #4 slots. CNU managed a 4-4 tie with a 7-5, 6-2 win over the Bishops' Mark Sokolov at the #5 seed, leaving Chang on the court with the match on the line. After dropping the first set 7-6, Chang battled back for a 6-3 win in the second and proceeded to win an epic third set 7-5.

The 5-4 victory is Wesleyan's first over a nationally-ranked opponent this season and gives the Bishops a perfect 9-0 record in the month of March. NCWC returns to action on Monday with a pair of USA South matches on the road at Ferrum College.
